Table for Heian Period: Princess Kaguya 'The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter'
Princess Kaguya is famous in Japan as Otsukimi princess, the heroine of the fairy tale 'The Tale of the Bamboo
Cutter' (Taketori Monogatari). This is the oldest story that was written in Heian Period. She had an unreal beauty
and was proposed many males. At the end of the story Princess Kaguya ascended to heaven at the full moon night,
‘Jyugoya’. I remember I cried so much at the end of the fairy tale when I was a small child. Taking a look at the table
for Heian period, the age of Princess Kaguya lived, was liberal atmosphere. Elegant court culture was bloomed and
Murasaki Shikibu, Seisho Nagon, and beautiful Ono no Komachi, those talented women of the time became popular.
It was told that their personalities showed the ways of how they ate. At the period, there were simple tastes so that
they seasoned rice to taste with four seasonings. Individual nature pieces and its culture could be generated based
on the style that each enjoyed each taste.
On the Table Today, cherish Princess in the Japanese history.
